In Partnership with Organicup
This July & August we are partnering with OrganiCup to explore wellbeing, self-care and sustainability, and how they work in harmony to help build a healthy lifestyle and future.
WHO IS ORGANICUP
Founded in 2012 in Copenhagen, OrganiCup have built their brand on the notion that they are more than just a menstrual cup. Believing that no one should be held back by their body they have created period products that are paving the way for their #NewPeriod manifesto. OrganiCup believe that period products should never contain harmful chemicals, nor absorb natural bodily secretions that lead to infections. Periods should never cause major pollution and they should never, ever be a source of shame.
With sustainability at the centre, OrganiCup create products for and with the people who use them; continuously committing to transparent and clear communication, and donating cups to people in need, all in the effort to destigmatize the conversation around periods.

After the whirlwind of 2020, a lot of us have come out the other side with a new perspective on what self-care and wellbeing means. We are all familiar with face mask, feet-up version of taking time for yourself, but after a year where everyone was so unsure of what the future might look like, self- care and wellbeing by definition have taken on more gravitas that just a night in and a good skincare routine.
We are all aware the fight for a more sustainable future is something we need to strive towards and because of this, sustainability is now something we simply have to factor into our self-care and wellbeing routines. Leading a more thoughtful, sustainable lifestyle is in practice, self-care as you navigate the ways in which you can be kinder to your body and your environment. That is why we are so honoured to partner with OrganiCup, who actively encourage and help a more sustainable and healthy way of living.
Over half the worlds population have periods, however there has been no period innovations in over 85 years. It was only in 2017 that period blood was show in a TV advert as red for the very first time. Standard disposable products that are used monthly by hundreds of thousands of women over the planet, are discarded, often containing harsh chemicals that we don’t think twice about putting inside our bodies. And as well as this, girls from all walks of life are shamed into missing school or work because they do not have access to standard period products that we all are guilty of taking for granted.
As we start to talk about all of these aspects that surround our period, we need to start factoring in better processes into our routines, to ensure there is a
more thoughtful and careful approach to how we deal with something as common as a period. OrganiCup are tackling these problems head on with their #NewPeriod campaign, breaking down barriers surrounding periods, ensuring the planet doesn’t suffer and no one is held back because of their body.

Over 350,000+ women have made the switch to OrganiCup and 9/10 women who try it, continue to use it. It might feel different at first, but with a little practice and know how it can become a seamless part of your period routine.
TO BE KINDER TO THE PLANET
Firstly, by using Organic you can drastically reduce the amount of waste that is caused through period products alone. Just one individual can use up to 11,000 disposable period products in a lifetime, contributing towards the 200,000 tons of waste caused by tampons, pads and pantyliners along with their packaging each year ending up on beaches, in the ocean and landfills.
As well as the products themselves being harmful, their lifecycle is also very damaging. From the production of cotton, involving the use of pesticides to the polyethylene plastic (the adhesive that’s used to make the pad stick to your underwear). Most tampons also contain chemicals such as dioxin, chlorine and rayon. While the products sit in landfills, these chemicals get soaked up by the earth and are released as pollution into the groundwater and air.
The OrganiCup is reusable for years and has minimal impact on the environment. Made from 100% medical grade silicone, a derivative of quartz, , a type of sand which is the earths second most abundant material and not hazardous to the environment. It's also free from colour additives.
BE KINDER TO YOURSELF
Standard period products such as tampons and pads contain harsh chemicals that we do not think twice about putting inside our bodies.
If made from non-organic cotton, the cotton is sprayed with pesticides and insecticides whilst growing, which are not only harmful to the planet but remain in the cotton which you then use. Other harsh chemicals found in standard period products include, dioxin, chlorine and rayon. Rayon being highly absorbent, and viscose and chlorine and dioxin all being a part of the bleaching process. Not what you want to put inside you!
Because products like tampons are incredibly absorbent, they will also absorb any natural bodily secretions, due to this women can suffer from infections that could be easily avoided.

Much like period poverty, OrganiCup’s work with NGOs spans the globe. In developing countries, such as Kenya and Namibia, these organizations have on the ground staff that does the necessary leg work before including cups in their projects. This isn't limited to finding out whether or not people have access to clean water, but is also about assessing if there any myths, taboos or religious/cultural barriers. In developed countries, such as the UK and Canada, OrganiCup’s partners distribute cups to girls that live in houses but still struggle financially to buy pads and tampons.
