Augmented Reality - The Future is Now
By Aoife McAnulty, Digital Marketing & Press Intern
Augmented reality (AR) is on the rise and is currently one of the biggest technology trends right now. Once AR ready devices become more accessible around the world then it will be on track to take over.
First, it is important to understand what AR is. Essentially, AR lets us see the real-life environment right in front of us with a digital augmentation overlaid on it. A classic example that most people will remember is Pokemon Go. Released in 2016, the mobile game quickly became an inescapable sensation. Players were able to locate and capture Pokemon characters that popped up in the real world. This allowed for a completely immersive experience which is why the game became so popular.
The use of AR is relevant to all industries. Fashion brands, in particular, are now recognising the impact of AR in terms of its ability to improve the marketing. For example, on e-commerce sites, viewing 3D models in AR increases conversion by up to 250 per cent. Now that is an increment you wouldn’t want to miss out on.
More importantly, although AR was gaining popularity prior to the pandemic, it is even more useful now. Since consumers are unable to go and physically try on clothes, companies are having to innovate and come up with new ways to encourage consumption. AR provides a solution - allowing digital try ons.
It is clear that the fashion industry is changing, from e-commerce to physical stores - VR and augmented reality is being used to enhance the user experience and help create relationships between the consumer and brands.
Lone Design Club are looking to involve innovators and change makers within the digital world to digitise the fashion sphere. Technology is the new display and this is where heads are turning, particularly with Fashion Week on the horizon. A way to make fashion week sustainable and help guests deep drive into the ethics behind each garment. As a company championing innovation, relationships, brand loyalty and sustainability, fashion tech is an amazing tool to help achieve these goals. Overall, whether it’s a physical store or an e-commerce site, one thing is clear: augmented reality can help enhance the customer’s shopping experience and affinity for the brand. A transformative medium that can provide so much more into a space, the future of retail, events and life itself will start to sit more in this realm. And not in a sci-fi way, but in a functional, transparent and helpful way.
