Approaching Christmas During Covid
By Phoebe J Carney, Contributor
The home is somewhere most of us have spent maybe a bit too much time this year, but if we have gained anything during the pandemic, it’s a renewed love for the art of relaxing and connecting with loved ones. And so, this Covid-soaked Christmas we are well prepared to return to the roots of what this holiday is truly about.
The festive season is, now more than ever, a great reason to get excited and have something to look forward to. Rather than be overwhelmed with last-minute shopping and worry about snatching up the latest trend to tick off the extensive Christmas lists, it’s time to embrace the handmade, the personal and the thoughtful.
Due to the fact we can’t get up to our usual shenanigans at the office party, or end up far too merry with all our friends down the pub on Christmas Eve, we must continue to engage in the things that kept the world going during lockdown and bring it all back to basics. The mass over-consumption that occurs over this particular holiday period has steadily dwarfed the importance of gifting less and more intimately, a small ritual that would take place after shamelessly singing Bing Crosby and indulging in mum’s slightly chewy Xmas pud.
Sitting around the fire and cosying up in with a mug of mulled wine while watching Elf on the TV can’t really be beaten, and is thankfully not something that can be added to the list of opportunities snatched from us this year, so why not do it in an earth-friendly and entirely unique style?
We have a wonderful selection of sustainable items that celebrate the creativity of our designers and make long-lasting, original gifts.
Designed and painted in East London, the SABINNA limited-edition collection of hand built ceramic crockery offers perfect cheerful treats for yourself or anyone else! Their rustic and playful appearance ensures each mug, bowl and plate is completely individual and exhibits the artistry of its maker. The Kana Striped Mug/Vases are hand shaped and great for enjoying a deliciously warm beverage, the 22-carat gold hand drawn stripe giving it that extra festive feeling. Better yet, they are multi-purposeful and can be used as a vase, to hold jewellery, or simply as charming ornaments.
In keeping with the theme of relaxation, our own LDC Pamper Package will allow you or a well-deserving family member to delve into a good old session of self-care. The package includes: a hand poured 100% vegan-friendly candle by ELM RD, who choose only natural and plant-based ingredients to create a selection of botanical scents; a Moo Hair Miracle Mask made from Icelandic moss to protect your hair from environmental toxins; a Clarity Organic Mood Roll from Haoma, an essential oil free from preservatives and emulsifiers that will clear your head of any stubborn stress; and lastly, some Senscommon Structured Logo Tencel Socks made from sustainably grown eucalyptus wood tree pulp to keep your feet warm and dry at all times (and let’s be honest, it wouldn’t be Christmas without a good pair of socks!)
Now, in paying particular attention to the artisan, the Anarela 100% Silk Scarves can’t go unnoticed. Made in Italy using a collaging technique, these scarf’s eclectic designs are inspired by paper clippings and all things fantastical, bringing the real and the divine together in silky slickness. They can be worn chicly tied around the neck, sloped effortlessly around the shoulders, or folded up coolly as a bandana.
Not only does buying less and buying better make for a more sustainable experience, it savours the intimacy of sharing gifts that matter. Christmas during Covid will be inescapably different, but that doesn’t mean it has to be less special.
