Plastic Free July is a global movement that fights plastic pollution and inspires people to live more sustainably in their everyday life. Taking action and avoiding single-use plastic is important, but have you ever thought about the plastic in your clothes? Join Lone Design Club as we celebrate the brands that are being part of the solution, repurposing plastic waste into creative designs.

Activewear that's good for the planet

Girlfriend Collective is an activewear brand that reuses post-consumer waste such as old water bottles, finishing nets and fabric scraps to create their garments. Girlfriend not only pride themselves on sustainability, but also on ethical production and a transparent supply chain.

Most activewear is made out of plastic, but Girlfriend Collective's is made out of plastic that would have otherwise ended up in oceans or landfills. This waste is turned into a soft recycled yarn that makes their activewear beautiful and long lasting.

They even sell a microfibre filter to attach to your washing machine that captures the tiny fibres that all synthetic fabric shed, preventing them from entering the water streams and oceans.

Conscious bottle tops

Bottletop creates bags and accessories with upcycled materials. Their signature bags are made from metal ring pulls, which are handcrafted into chain mail fabric by their skilled artisans in Brazil.

Sustainability is at the core of everything they do; they completely removed the use of plastic packaging from their supply chain and they offer a program that allows customers to bring in their old bags, whose ring-pulls will be reused and turned into a new item. Their leather supply chain has Zero Deforestation impact and is sourced from sustainable farms.

They aim to empower their workers and communities with the Bottletop Foundation, which thanks to health education and training programs helps disadvantaged young people take control of their life.

Fashion forward, ethical and sustainable

Trash Planet's mission is to make the planet greener and create a 100% recycled sneaker, without sacrificing style or comfort. They use post-consumer recycled polyester, which is partly collected from beaches and rivers by their partner's oceans clean up initiative. 

The sneakers' lining is vegan and the leather is made with recycled corn fibres, which are a waste product from the food industry. The soles are composed of natural recycled rubber, sourced from trees instead of being petroleum based.

They also produce organic and recycled apparel made with water-based ink and plastic-free embroidery. All this practices drastically reduce Trash Planet's use of plastic and carbon emissions compared to the industry's average.

Their entire production is located in Portugal, where they can ensure good and fair working conditions and be always in close contact with their workers.
