Travel Back to the 70s with hit TV Show The Serpent

By Allana Allen, LDC Brand Curator

LDC's guide to 70's styling, inspired by The Serpent

The 1970s still remains one of the most influential fashion periods of all time with floral prints and a ‘Peace and Love’ attitude inspiring brands such as Gucci and Versace, it is no surprise that the 70s are also inspiring TV and Cinema wardrobes of today.

In the hit BBC drama ‘The Serpent’ following Thailand's 1970’s hippie trail and starring Jenna Coleman as Marie - Andrée Leclerc, the girlfriend and partner in-crime of notorious serial killer Charles Sobhraj portrayed by Tahar Rahim; who tormented the Thailand hippie population in the 1970s. We see an array of vivid patterns, shapes and colours that all pay homage to the iconic 1970s decade that arguably shaped today's fashion. Here is how we would recreate some of our favourite 70s looks from the series.

In the show, Marie-Andrée leclerc has a dominating alter-ego created by her boyfriend Sobhraj, she calls her ‘Monique’. The two identities couldn’t be more different, and of course have a huge impact on Coleman’s outfit choices throughout the series.

MARIEE - ANDREE

Whilst we can often see Marie-Andrée gracefully drifting in kaftans and Kimonos, Monique walks with a purpose. You’ll find Monique stealing the show in tailored suits and daring shirts. And although we may be more comfortable with Mariee - Andrée’s wardrobe, it’s Moniques wardrobe that we’d kill for.

Channel your inner Marie- Andrée with our Angelica Kimono from Anarela paired with our Dhiggaamaa Bikini from Kandumathi for the days when all you feel like doing is lounging by the poolside, just like in The Serpent. This outfit will give you that retro 70’s holiday feel that we’re all longing for.

If you're looking for something slightly more practical, but still with a vintage touch then our Indian Flora Dresses by Sarah & Sorrentio are exactly what you need. With a Floral print that reminds us of Gucci with a Hippie twist, these are the perfect dresses for floating around in your living room, or running a couple of errands. Finish off the look with our Uxia Organic bag from Dedias and you’ll be a retro dream.

CHARLES SOBHRAJ

Of course we couldn’t forget about the man himself, Charles Sobhraj. Whilst he can often be seen matching Monique’s bold outfit choices, there is a slight cooler flare to him that is reflected in his relaxed Slacks and buttoned-down shirts. Recreate Sobhraj’s look with our Wrap shirt from Trace Collective and your favourite pair of tailored trousers for that smooth criminal feel; combine this with a pair of our Jill Daim Darjeeling boots from Pete Sorensen and some of our Big Horn Shades to finish off this retro look.

Here at Lone Design Club, we are of course really looking forward to being able to dress up and go out once again.
